In the early 9th Century, Kobo Daishi visited here and while praying for the safety oh those on water, carved the main deity.
This Juichimen Kannon Bosatsu statue was called funadama kannon (spirit of the boat kannon) and the temple became known as a place to pray for the safety of sailors and fisherman.
